What steps do I have to take to have my property taxes adjusted?
I recently bought a bank owned condo in Northern California – at close of escrow, I had to pay property taxes for my condo based on an (older) higher value. My agent told me I paid about 2x what I should have.
She told me that they would adjust the taxes on my next payment (6 months from now). A friend told me that the county will never automatically lower your property taxes. He suggested I wait until I receive my tax amount 6 months from now and protest it.
If there’s anyone who has knowledge about the correct way to have my property taxes lowered, your advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I found some helpful information on how to appeal the tax assessment on your property on the California Board of Equalization website: http://www.boe.ca.gov/proptaxes/faqs/assessappeals.htm. It looks like the first step you will have to take is to call the County Assessor’s office and explain your situation to them. I hope this helps.
