Buying boat in Ohio but registering in Kentucky?
I am being told by a small dealer(via ebay) that there is an additional $295 to handle the documents required to transfer ownership to me in Ohio…by law??? Really? Is Ohio really that different from a lot of states requiring a bill of sale/Notary on back of title showing the sale to me? This simply sounds like an easy way to get an additional 5.3% since the boat only cost $5600. I know I will have to pay sales/property tax in KY if not charged sales tax in Ohio and also any registration/title fees in KY. Anyone on here really know the facts concerning Ohio?
Bill of sale & signed title are all you need to transfer title & then register boat in Ohio. They are trying to bilk you for what you can do yourself. Check with Ohio title office for those facts you need not here. I prefer to register my boat in the state where I keep the boat ( home waters). This helps pay my way for the services provided.
I personally would take title & register in KY just to avoid changing registration numbers on boat.
I have actually done that…sailed in OH kept title & registration in OH & lived in KY…never a problem….
